What it is

NMEA 2000 (often called N2K) is a CAN-based, plug-and-play network standardised as IEC 61162-3, letting many devices share one backbone cable.

How it works

It runs at 250 kbit/s and carries standardised messages known as PGNs (Parameter Group Numbers), with devices automatically claiming network addresses.

Why it dominates

Compared with NMEA 0183 it offers simpler wiring, more speed and true interoperability, which is why it is the modern backbone for instrument data.
