What it is

AIS is a transponder system, mandatory on many vessels, that broadcasts identity, position, course and speed over VHF for traffic awareness and collision avoidance.

How it works

AIS data is carried inside NMEA 0183 sentences and received by nearby ships, coastal stations and satellites, the last giving global coverage far from shore.

Beyond safety

AIS is the backbone of vessel-tracking platforms, ETA estimation and supply-chain visibility, since it provides a free, near-ubiquitous position feed.
