The operational backbone
Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS) are mandatory under the ISM Code and form the operational core: maintenance schedules, spares, inspections and compliance. They increasingly integrate with ERP (SAP, Oracle, Dynamics) and external data through APIs.
Technical management systems
Established suites include DNV ShipManager, ABS Nautical Systems, BASSnet, ShipNet and Veson IMOS for the commercial side. Each covers maintenance, procurement and QHSE, and most expose an integration layer for connecting other tools.
Vessel data platforms and edge
A newer layer collects sensor data on board and shares it ashore. Platforms such as Kongsberg Vessel Insight use edge devices and secure networks, while onboard edge servers keep critical functions running even when the satellite link drops.
Connecting platforms via API
The real value is in the seams: pulling data out of one system and pushing results into another. That is where most projects live — and where fragmented systems, manual reporting and poor interoperability still cause pain.
